Change of idea

We have had to chance our original idea of the music video. Through careful consideration me and my colleague came to the conclusion that if we used the original idea it would be almost the same as the artists music video. So we have created a new idea which will make our music video completely different to the artists.

Music Video Amimatic

This is the animatic for our music video which shows whats going to happen etc. We've put the music on in the background so it fits.

Filming techniques

Tracking shot:
As one of the ways we are going to be filming the music video is doing a tracking shot, I have uploaded a video of how to make a tripod into a track dolly. We have spent good time in researching filming techniques that can be used for the music video. We believe that this filming technique will be very effective based on the idea we have. The idea is to use the tripod like this as it will produce a very good shot that can be very effective in the video. It is also cost efficient as it costs nothing to make.

Steadicam Shot:
This is another filming technique that we are planning to use for our music video. This particular way of filming will be used in the scene that the singer is walking, singing and being filmed in a steadicam shot. This is very effective as we can get a fluent shot of the singer, without having the un-steady shot we would get if we were to use handheld filming.

Outline of idea for music video

The idea of our music video is simple but effective. The idea of our music video has came down to a tracking shot of the main singer in the video. Due to the songs tempo and steady rhythm, we feel that having it filmed using a tracking shot would be good. Filming the video any other way would not fit the steady rhythm of the song we are doing, and it would make the filming a lot harder. The music video will be based around the original music video, but we will change in many ways, making it our own take on it. The singer will be stationed in a public area, and all of a sudden he gets attacked and knocked unconscious. After being knocked unconscious the singer is filmed making his way back to his home. The plan is to film some of the singers journey home, from a sidewards position. The video video will then be projected on a blank sheet, and we will have the singer in front pretending to walk as if he were actually there. From this the plan is to switch to a shot of the singer in the real world on location, which will be filmed from the front showing him looking dazed and confused. During this "reality scene" we plan on having things going on in the background that are relevant to the songs lyrics. At the end the singer is killed.

Audience Research results

Based on the Vox Pops, Survey and other forms of audience research that we have carried out, we have been given a wide range of feedback which will influence our music video. After doing the audience research we realized that the majority of people we asked tend to watch music videos often. This would possibly be because there are many ways in which they can do so. Whereas if the research was done like 10 years ago that wouldn't have been the case as music videos were a lot harder to find. The audience research that was carried out is very useful for us, as we can feel confident enough that people will be able to watch our music video.

Survey Monkey results- Audience Research

These are our results for the audience research into music videos. we asked what types of music people like to listen to so that we knew which was the most popular to a set audience. As you can see "Rock" is shown to be the most popular due to the fact that the word Rock is a bigger size to the others.

Student Music Video Analysis

CHRISTINA, EMMA & ROB - 'SHADOWS' FINAL VIDEO from Long Road Applied Media Diploma on Vimeo.

this is an excellent example of a well produced music video that has had a though put into it. The lighting that is used in the video is very effective. They have used little lights which give the video a delicate look and makes the blueish color stand out a lot. This music video by a past student is very effective as it uses many different filming techniques and the mise en scene has been used perfectly, making it a brilliant peace of work.

Student Digipak Analysis

This digipak from a student a couple of years ago is a very good example of a successful digipak. The colour of the digipak fits the overall blueish colour that is used in the video which makes the digipak fit the music video. There is an image of a tree on the thrid panel of the digipak, this shows how they have inked as much of the digipak to the music video as they could.

As well as the digipak being a very good example, the magazine advert that was produced was of a good quality. The font that has been used on the digipak and in fact the advert, really suits the name of the artist. It is a large size which stands out to the person/s looking at it.

Ideas Mood Board

This is as mood board of ideas for our Music Promo Video.

Vox Populi

Vox Populi (Latin)-voice of the people.

Usually the interviewees are shown in public places, and are supposed to be giving spontaneous opinions in a chance encounter.

Vox Pops are often used on news programmes to show 'balance'

'Opinion was divided on the streets...'

Each person is asked the same question, the aim is to get a variety of answers and opinions on any given subject.

Journalists are usually instructed to approach a wide range of people to get varied answers from different points of views.

Picture of a Vox Pops taking place.

This is a comical version of Vox Pops which is really just making fun of the original way they are filmed. It takes the seriousness out of Vox Pops.

Analysis of 3 favourite music videos

This music video is very good, in many different ways. The mise en scene of this music video is very effective. The director of this music video has edited the video to the bet of the song. The artist is seen trowing cards that refer to artists away after each one is said.

This music video has a very effective mise en scene. It is filmed in a dark place which ties with the title of the single "close enemies". This shows how close enemies are dark etc. There is minimal light in the video which also makes the scenery very dark.

Proposal as to how to expand/broaden audience /increase sales

We could expand, broaden audience, increase sales in many different ways.

to expand our ideas we want to think openly about attracting not only fans on the genere of music but to also attract new listners. We have thought about using a wide range of advertisements to reach of to ne people. these could include posting in newspapers, and flyers etc.

Album cover analysis-The Beatles

This is the album cover for the Beatles album "Abbey Road". It is a very good album cover as it shows the Beatles crossing the road, which is in fact the Abbey Road zebra crossing.

What goes on a Magazine advert

There are many things that you would find on a magazine advert these are:
Name of artist and album
Date of release
Where it is available to purchase
Record company information
Quotes/Reviews

What goes on a Digipak

There are numerous conventions of a digipak. It contains information that will make you want to buy the CD
Digipak conventions:

Name of Artist and Album
Track list
Barcode
Record company logo/information
Disk impression & separate disc design.
6 Panels
Spine- with the name of artist/album.
Image of the artist is not compulsory on the outside but a good idea to have on the inside

Detailed research into artist

I have taken time to do detailed research into the artist we are using, throughout music magazines, NME.com, and the artists official websites. There was an interview done by Paul Morley, in which he asked questions about the artist. It included why he has the name, what type of artist he regards himself as, where his ideas arose from and why he got into the music industry. This particular interview is effective for us as it gives us a rough outline of the artist.

Here is the link for the interview:

Initial Ideas Brainstorm

This a brainstorm of our initial ideas for the music promo video.

Chosen Artist profile- Scroobius Pip

Scroobius Pip

He is an artist that is signed to the record label speech development. The record label by Pip and has signed several other artists. He is an electronic/hip hop artist.

lip synching practice- Thou shalt always kill

After doing the preliminary task for lip synching we wanted to practice the lip synching to get an idea of how well it was possible for me to do it. We placed the lyrics away from the camera and I sang the song as best I could which helped give us a rough idea of how its going to go in the real thing.

copy right law

The copyright law is a law whereby you can't use products etc which have been copyrighted. For example for our music video we cannot use music that is copyrighted.

Emil Nava- Case Study

Emil Nava began his career as a runner, this is a person that would take various video to multiple studios to have them looked at. He then began to work at blink productions and from their began to work free lance for OB management.
After working as a runner he graduated to assistant director (A.D) where he would manage the video shoots. He went on to sign to academy, which is the biggest music video production company, then worked for believe the eyes and now mainly works for pulse.
He has made videos for artists such as Ed Sheeran and Paloma Faith. From his work on music videos he was hired to do adverts for hair dye.

Ed Sheeran-You need me I don't need you

One of Ed Sheeran's first music videos was directed by Emil Nava. This video cost £35,000 to film. His video did not include Ed which was seen by most people as weird. He wasn't included because Nava didn't like his image at that particular time. This led to getting someone else to sign the lyrics to the song as they were too fast to get someone to lip synch.

Ed Sheeran- Lego House

Paloma Faith- 30 Minute Love Affair

Jessie J- Do it like a dude

Preliminary task video- Don't go breaking my heart

OB management

OB management is a company that works as an agent for music directors. They get contracts from artists and they assign directors to make the videos fro them.

They have three main aims. These are:

  1. to work with record labels and production companies
  2. to match directors with artists.
  3. And to nurture talent.

Case Study-Jamie Thraves

Director Jamie Thraves made short films at University, he used an award-winning short film as a "calling card" to get a "foot in the door" with the video production company factory films. Began by shooting three very low music videos which cost about £5,000 each.

This is how the process works, a "commissioner" from a record label sends a track to 5-10 directors. The directors then each submit a treatment, this stage is unpaid. The director who has submitted the "best" treatment is then commissioned to make the video. only then will the director be paid the money.

As can be seen for many directors in the businesses it is a precarious existence when their livelihood is essentially dependent on each commission. Jamie Thraves submitted treatments for his 2 best known videos and each was accepted.

Radiohead- Just

£100,000 budget

Shot in three days

Coldplay- The Scientist

This music promo video had a £100,000 budget to be produced. The video was shot in just three days making it a very successful video. He used one line of the song to base the video on.

Looking for songs

we spent a lesson looking for non-copyright/un signed music, for our music video. we had a look at a few and have started to have some sort of success. we have narrowed the search down to 2 songs by Scroobius Pip, whom we have been given permission by. we just have to decide which one we can be successful with, and then get started on the planning then the filming.

Music Promo Video

Purpose of a music promo video:
promote the artist- a good music video will help get more people viewing their videos and listening to their songs
change the image of the artist- a successful music video can make the artist stand out and become a very popular and successful individual
help the album to sell- music videos will help sell the songs as the general public will watch the videos, like the song, then go out and purchase the song

Singing a Duet

In class we did the duet "Dont go breaking my heart" to get used to singing and being filmed singing.

Scroobius Pip songs

Now that we have recieved confirmation from scroobius pip, we can start looking through his songs to choose which one we can create a video for and which will difficult or easy.

This is Scroobius Pip and Dan Le Sac's song Sick Tonight. we like this song and are considering using it for our own music video as we have been given permission by the artist to use many of his songs. We  like the beat to song, it is  very upbeat song. Although the lyrics are pretty difficult there are a lot of hard lyrics that could prove difficult to learn then put into lip synching. The speed of the song makes the lyrics hard to follow.

This song Introdiction, is a very good song and the music video complements this. The lyrics to the song are pretty easy but at a pretty past speed. I like it as it has a lot of different effects and the things he does are very interesting

This Scroobius Pip song, thou shalt always kill, is a very good song and have a well constructed video to accompany it. The lyrics are easy to learn, and I know the majority of them. IT would be a good song for us to attempt to do, but the video uses a lot of really good ideas. Trying to better this will be very difficult but we would relish the challenge.

Finished task- editing to the beat

This is the finished product for the editing to the beat task. I had to do various of things to make the editing go in time with the beat, this included cutting, split screening etc. I found the majority of it hard as getting the editing to fit with the beat was difficult. Although i now know how to edit to the beat and this help me and put me in good stead for when we edit our music video, as i will now be capable to contribute with the editing.

Screenshot of editing to the beat

This is a screen shot for the editing to the beat I had to do. It shows the tools that I had to use to get the editing to the beat done.  It was a reasonably hard process but overall I feel I done the best that I possibly could've.

Editing to the beat

We were given the task of editing to the beat.  we used the song Dont push me. we had to edit it to the best of our ability.
